Trust, but verify.

Titathink--Trust, but verfiy

When we trust people, we will talk everything to them. We will help them when they need any help. We even let them do work without verification. And we believe that we will return the trust.

Do we believe that? Yes, we do. But do we doubt about it? Yes, we also do. So according to the famous proverb: “Trust, but verify”. Russian proverb made famous by Ronald Reagan in the context of nuclear disarmament.

It reminds me of one of my friends Mike, a boss of a supermarket in California. He hired a nanny to look after his house and his pets. The nanny was good, kind and religious. Mike trusted her and was kind to her. One day, when Mike went travelling for business for one week. Then he came back, the nanny disappeared and some of expensive watches and some money were disappeared also. Luckily, his pets were still alive. He was just said, “Let it go. Next time I will be more careful”.

Let’s see this dialogue about why people need to install a security camera in their rooms.

“Human-Clark, why are you installing a camera in your room?”

“Well, the doors on this ship don’t lock.”

“… and?”

“I need to make sure no one messes with my stuff.”

“But… every member of the crew has sworn the same oath, to support and respect each other.  No crew member would take from another!”

“Well, yeah.  I’m just making sure.  Can’t be too careful.”

I trust you, but I still need to make sure that everything is correct.

If a prisoner behaves well and presents themselves as worthy of trust, we will release them, but only on the condition that we verify, via check-ins with a parole officer.

We trust you, but we also install spy cameras to verify when we are not there.
